Mississippi Valley State University, also referred to as MVSU or "The Valley" is a historically black university located in Itta Bena, which is a city in Leflore County, in the US state of Mississippi, with a population estimated at little over 2000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The city?s name is derived from the Choctaw phrase for "camp together" or "home in the woods".
MVSU was opened in 1950, being created by the Mississippi Legislature as Mississippi Vocational College. The Institution had its name changed several times, over the years, since it first opened its door to students, finally, adopting its current name in 1974, in 1998, many of the buildings on campus also being renamed, except the ones named after Wright, Sillers and J. H. White.
The athletic teams from MVSU are known as the Delta Devils, who compete in NCAA?s Division I (I-AA for football) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), in various sports, including football, basketball, tennis, golf, volleyball, softball, bowling and track. Among the notable alumni which have made themselves notable in athletics, after attending The Valley, there is also NFL wide receiver Jerry Rice of the 1984 football team.
